Understanding Terrain is Fundamental: ComputaMaps DxM
While any RF engineer understands that a DTM and related clutter are fundamental for wireless network planning,
they may not realize the roles these same products can play in other vertical markets.
Before the computer age, national mapping agencies expended tremendous resources to generate contours for
cartography given its importance for nation building.
Now, using satellite imagery and other means, it is possible to have any region of the world at your fingertips.
ComputaMaps recently launched our DxM product line of 3D geodata for markets not addressed by our Planner telecom products.
The DxM products excel in applications for civil engineering, mining and hydrology/floodplain analysis.
Around the world, civil engineers need to understand the topography of their project's location,
whether the structure being contemplated is a highway, power transmission lines, oil and gas pipeline, dam, etc.
As with all ComputaMaps products, the quality and accuracy of the geodata is critical.
If the simulations and calculations do not translate into the real world, then the effort is futile.
Reliable DTMs, available in resolutions from 1-5m allow for an understanding of geospatial data critical
to the planning and development of the essential infrastructure required to support a growing civilian population.
ComputaMaps can support rural and urban requirements, including building polygons where necessary.
The geodata requirements of a mining operation vary depending on its status in the project lifecycle.
The industry is highly regulated, and geodata has an important role to play in exploring for appropriate sites, as well as the safe development,
regulatory compliance and operation of a subterranean or open pit mine.
In the planning process, geodata can support environmental impact and hydrological studies, as well as hazard assessments and
related infrastructure planning.
Once the mine is operational, DxM data can be used to fulfill regulatory filings and in support of site remediation efforts.
In this final use case, the data and related orthoimagery can be submitted as evidence that the former mining site has been returned to a state similar to the surrounding area.
The DxM suite of products also has a role to play in water management, including floodplain analysis and sea-level
monitoring for coastal areas.
A floodplain map delineates the area that can be expected to flood, typically once every 200 years.
A DSM can be used to show a floodplain indicating the normal channel of water and surrounding land use,
in conjunction with ground elevation contours, flood levels and floodplain limits.
Flood routing and floodplain hydraulics are used to route runoff and external inflows through the civil engineered drainage system network of pipes,
channels, storage/treatment units and diversion structures.
ComputaMaps’ account team works with our public and private sector customers needing this information to ensure they receive
fit-for-purpose data in the required format.
With the introduction of the DxM product line we are hoping to share our quality geodata – including an extensive off-the-shelf archive –
with new customers needing accurate terrain data through our global sales and support offices.
While ComputaMaps has introduced products for other markets, we also remain focused on telecom in support of the global migration to LTE.
